Information from the Department of Transportation about the Bridge Closing on Route 98. The bridge is expected to be closed from October 17, 2022 - Spring 2024
Q: Will the bridge remain closed during winter?
A: Yes, since the bridge is being lifted out of place it will remain unusable during winter months.
Q: Why will it be closed for so long?
A: In order for us to maintain the iconic character for the village, it requires highly skilled work to install highly customized parts, which necessitates the duration of the closure.
This $28.3 million bridge rehabilitation project will maintain and preserve the State Route 98 bridge over the historic Erie Canal.
During construction, the bridge will be dismantled with individual trusses lifted and placed in the lot adjacent to the Canal, where the rehabilitation work will occur. When work is complete, it will be moved back into place over the Canal.
The contract includes the rehabilitation of State Route 19 over the Erie Canal in the Village of Brockport.
What Will the Project Accomplish?
As part of the project, NYSDOT will replace the bridge deck and portions of the truss system with high-strength, galvanized steel. The lifting system’s mechanical and electrical components will be replaced and the lift towers rehabilitated.
Work will also include replacing bridge rails and repainting the bridge to maintain its current shade of green.
Why is the Project Important?
Bridges over the Erie Canal are rich with New York State history and are iconic to the communities in which they sit. Maintaining this character and community identity is imperative and precisely why a project is being implemented.
This work will modernize and fortify the internal workings of the bridge without comprising the external character that makes this bridge an iconic part of the Albion community.
Minimizing Construction Impacts
Access to businesses and the Erie Canal Trailway will be maintained throughout the project.
A signed detour will be in place utilizing State Routes 31, 387 (Fancher Road), and 104 (Ridge Road).
